I was very pleased with all aspects of this hotel. The stag was professional, and friendly. I have read some reviews that the food was not a good as in Zermatt. To that I would say, define good, or great for that matter. I think some people might be referring to the number of choices. I found the meals to be full of flavor and sometimes accompanied by a burst of shear delight!!! There are logistical issues with operating a restaurant at 3100 meters so kudos to the management.

A truly remarkable and special experience, not for everyone. At 3100 meters atop the Gornergrat mountain the hotel looks across a craggy valley directly at the Matterhorn. If you stay overnight, youll have violet sunset inky velvet nighttime, and peach/salmon dawn; the tourist crowd will have left you to a semi-private retreat that will awe you. The hotel is a relaxed, friendly full service, laid back, quietly luxurious, value-loaded spot thats more reminiscent of Four Seasons than the Ritz. Theres no spa or pool; you want to walk or trek paths. Our suite held luxe linens, spacious ease, and views and views. Bath was upscale. Nothings perfect. The small and intimate dining room for hotel guests only (tourists eat at the larger separate buffet bar) has fabulous and complete breakfast bar and dinner salad bar, but dinner plat (included) had beef as at Simpsons or fried trout that were not remarkable. The cream of rice soup with leek and lemon was superb but they wouldnt divulge the recipe. Service was friendly, conversational, expert. Wine list was value oriented with local pleasant surprises and education from staff. Theres gift shopping at a lower level of course, but as a hotel guest (really more like an elegant prewar pension flavor than hotel) youre away from all that. During the day if you like you can eat on the outdoor terrace. Staff are always available but not in your way, just as it should be. Note that crystal clear weather cannot be guaranteed but if youre favored with good weather as we were you can see forever here. In sum, expensive and worth every Swiss franc. Youll never forget it.

I read a few good and bad reviews and have to say that I agree with most of them. You have to consider: The hotel is expensive. You are cut off from the rest of the world after the last train leaves. The food is adequate, good, but not amazing. You are at 3100 meters, 10,000 feet You may have clear weather. You may have nothing but clouds or you may have anything in between. Go in with your eyes open. We did and had one of the best experiences ever. We stayed one night in the Matterhorn Suite. It was lovely. It has natural pine walls decorated with little except windows and a mural featuring a rock from the summit of the Matterhorn. You have a super comfortable bed and a sunken living area. The bathroom has two sinks, plenty of counter space, a tub and a separate shower and a wonderful view. The food is not great. Its fine. I thought the salad bar was very good and the dessert were yummy. The main course left something to be desired but, as I said, it was fine. I was impressed with the inexpensive Swiss Pinot Noir the waiter recommended. Good French Pinot Noir characteristics-rare to find in an inexpensive wine. Breakfast was Swiss with a buffet along with cooked-to-order foods. The dining room staff is FANTASTIC. They are friendly, knowledgable, and helpful. Now for why you go there-the location. You are removed from the rest of the world and for us that was perfect. We had both clouds and sun. The clouds kept moving creating an ever changing 360 degree view (go to the overlook just above the hotel and experience being completely surrounded by the mountains). Then, at night, the stars came out. The moon was about 1/2 full so the moonshine impacted the number of visible stars. We still saw Jupiter, the moon, and Saturn all in a row. The Milky Way was completely visible and there were loads of constellations. Then the moon set and we could see the universe. Too many stars to imagine-breathtaking. Some have said that its difficult to sleep because of the altitude. I had difficulty sleeping because I was so excited about what I could see. Then there was the sunrise-the Matterhorn with the colors of sunrise. Words cant express the beauty. After breakfast, the crowds descend and we had to share our bit of paradise with them. Happy to share. We had the amazing quiet and beauty to ourselves for a few hours. Be prepared for an international experience. I loved seeing people from several countries going outside in the middle of the night to experience the sky. Even though we didnt share a language we communicated an appreciation for the beauty. So much better than Zermatt. You can stay in a tourist town anytime and anywhere. How often can you stay at the top of the world. One hint-remember to drink lots of water. Tap water is delicious and the mineral water is complimentary.

    • Terrible food, small rooms

We spent 2 nights at the hotel and paid 480chf per night for half board. (Breakfast and 4 course dinner). Unfortunately the vegan evening meals (fixed menu with 2 options for main) cooked for us were appalling. We had given the hotel 2 weeks notice. The first course was a standard salad bar - same as you would find at a 2-3 star hotel. The second and third and fourth courses (prepared by the kitchen) were so bad I sent mine back twice and then just gave up. We have lived in Switzerland for 5 years and expected much better. The serving staff were pleasant and helpful but the food was terrible. I suggest staying down in Zermatt for HALF the price!! enjoy wonderful meals there and just take the train up for a day trip. Its only a 40min pleasant train trip!

We decided to get to the top by feet from Zermatt. A very long walk of 6 h and 1600m of positive ascension but it was Worth it. The hotel has a wonderflull view and the team is just perfect. It is very pleasant to stay at the top of the mountain while everybody is going back to the sity. The restaurant is also very good and the breakfast is perfect for a good walk back to the valley.
